The sitting dog gazes up to its owner with its head slightly tilted as if waiting for a command, an expression we are all familiar with even in the present world. The elegant modelling of this Mastiff is a great example of the meticulous study by the potter of the anatomy of such animal. These types of sculptures were to be included in the tomb along with other objects of animals all mirrored from the owners’ property to be taken to serve in the afterlife.
