A Rare Northern Sung Black Lacquered Dish

The lacquered dish is delicately constructed with sharp angular sides
and of shallow circular form elegantly flaring at an angle from a
flat circular base, all supported on a short foot ring, lacquered overall with a lustrous brownish-black lacquer, the rim encircled with metal.
- A similar black lacquer dish with the same dimensions was included in the exhibition Sō Gen no bi. Denrai no shikki o chūshin/ e Colours and Forms of Song and Yuan China. Featuring Lacquerwares, Ceramics and Metalwares, Nezu Institute of Fine Arts, Tokyo, 2004, cat. no. 16; and another was sold at Christie’s London, 9th June 1975, lot 141.
- Another one with the same dimensions was in Sakamoto Goro’s collection and sold in the Sotheby’s Hong Kong sale rooms on the 7th October 2013.
- Compare Ding dishes of this attractive angular shape, such as a white-glazed example in the Palace Museum, Beijing, illustrated in Selection of Ding Ware. The Palace Museum’s Collection and Archaeological Excavation, Beijing, 2012, pl. 51 and another from the collection of John Henry Levy, sold in our London rooms, 8th July 1975, lot 72.
