Korean Brown Glazed Bottle
Yi Dynasty-19th Century
High-Fired Stoneware
Korea
11cm x 14.6cm
This unique bottle is covered in a chestnut brown glaze which has been applied unevenly, giving the piece wonderful dimension in colour with sprinkles of darker brown and hazel hues. The bottle is petite in size with a flat base, rounded sides and slender neck which leads into a slightly flaring mouth.
Bottles and flasks with thick iron-brown and black glazes became popular during the Choson period. The neutral tones of these pieces represented a break from the popular polychrome and blue and white porcelain wares at the time.
