Early Ceramics, Tenrei: Elegance
Olive Green Glazed Water Jar
Jin Dynasty (260-420)
Yue Ware, Stoneware
Zhejiang Province, China
H:16cm x D:13.5cm
Yue stoneware jar with straight sides that taper towards a flat footrim, the mouth with a wide flattened rim with a crisp diaper band above a simple repeated pattern of incised lines. The jar is covered with a lustrous olive green glaze that stops short of the base exposing the dark brown-red clay body. Used to store liquids, probably wine. Now used as a mizusashi or water container in the Japanese tea ceremony. The mizusashi is used to contain fresh cold water and normally used to top up the chagama (Iron utensil).
