Quatrefoil White Glazed Ding Ware Dish with a Barbed Rim

Five Dynasties (907-960)
Ding ware, High-fired Stoneware
Hebei Province, China
H: 3cm D: 13.5cm

The bowl is finely potted with thin sides that flare out from the central flat medallion to a carefully knife-pared rim to form four lotus-petals, covered overall with a lustrous white slip under a transparent glaze. The bowl exhibits ‘tear marks’ on the underside where the glaze pools, the footrim is short, thin and splayed outwards and is left unglazed to expose the clay body.
