Black Lacquer Inro with Floral Book Design
c.1880
Lacquer
Japan
7.5cm x 5cm
This inro of a curved rectangular form features a background of sparkling gold flecks (hirame). Against this dazzling background is an intricate takamakie design of various open and closed flower books. The books are reminiscent of traditional Japanese flower cards (hanafuda) and the detail depicted on them is quite exquisite. A myriad of traditional Japanese flowers are depicted from cherry blossoms to maple leaves. The floral motif extends to the metal top bead (ojime) and the interior is covered in a dense nashiji. The netsuke is in the shape of a circular medallion and features a jovial scene of a laughing monk.
