The Yuezhou kilns in Hunan province started stoneware manufacture during the Han dynasty (B.C.202- A.D 220), peaking in the Southern dynasties (420-589). Archaeological findings reveal bowls of this type were manufactured c.510. Yuezhou kilns were able to fire extremely high quality vessels making them very popular. They were widely distributed throughout the country, often found in the Royal tombs in the North of the country suggesting they were seen to be superior to locally produced northern wares of the same period.
• Similar vessels of this form and with this pattern are displayed in the Yuezhouyao Yizhi Museum, Xiangyin County, Hunan Province, China.
