Yueyao Green Glazed Globular Vase

Song Dynasty (960-1279)
Yue Ware, Stoneware
Zhejiang Province, China
H:11.5cm x D:11cm

Yue stoneware globular vase with rounded sides and a everted rim. The vase covered with a glossy olive green glaze. There are three lines around the widest part of the vase. The footrim is flat and unglazed exposing the hard grey body. Copied from a metal form, it is possible the function of the vase was to contain wine, it is also known as a ‘Zhadou’ or spittoon, although more recent research suggest these vessels were used as a tea utensil storing used tea leaves.
